"connie & jimmy"

connie & jimmy "connie & jimmy" is romantic nostalgia. We romanticize the thought of taking a horse-carriage ride, as if it makes us feel connected to our ancestors. It's quite the opposite actually. To honor them we ought to observe the past and allow it to assist us in building a brighter future. We now know that the horse-drawn carriage industry is inhumane, dangerous to horses and people, and unnecessary. Alternatives are available. It's time to make history!

"connie & jimmy" supports New York State Senate and Assembly Bill S5013/A7748, sponsored by State Senator Tony Avella and Assembly Member Linda Rosenthal. This bill calls for a ban of horse-drawn carriages in New York City and finding good homes for all the carriage horses.

Gosh, don't get pulled in. Boycott horse-drawn carriages.

SUBJECT, 2012

SUBJECT, 2012 from James Koroni on Vimeo.

The questions that SUBJECT asks are, "Who is a subject? To what do we subject others? Is this a subject worth considering?" In philosophy, a subject is a being that has subjective experiences, a subjective consciousness or a relationship with another entity.

In SUBJECT we reveal the intimacy of human and non-human relationships, validating them as subjects, which departs from their popular assignment as objects to be subjected to human will, whim and desire.

James Koroni, Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, 2012

In SUBJECT, I perform for, with and around these rescued farm animals at the Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary, and they acknowledge my presence. They are viewers. As a performer I evoke emotional responses, some jovial and affectionate and others curious and reserved. They are complex sentient being and all respond as individuals.

ALLIANCE - Double Shadow

Double Shadow, ALLIANCE, Enforced Arch

Double Shadow is a commentary on the separation of masculinity and compassion. The masculine character in mainstream culture is a brute, the bread winner and of course, emotionless. These stereotypes are limiting and oppressive. Double Shadow presents the masculine character, exposes it’s struggles to survive with unrealistic expectations and offers viewers an opportunity to witness individuals who aren’t afraid to be seen as compassionate or sensitive.

ALLIANCE: Part 5 - Klara Beyeler

Klara Beyeler, Enforced Arch Klara Beyeler can handle a storm. Everything we ask of her is never too much and she is always in the best of spirits. She consistently pushes herself beyond her boundaries and because of this, her artistry will forever have exponential growth.

ALLIANCE, Enforced ArchOn April 6th and 7th, Enforced Arch is presenting their latest work, ‘ALLIANCE’ Art & Activism, which features past and current pieces by creative directors James Koroni and Tracey Katof. Klara Beyeler is a member of this project and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have her join us on this adventure! After rehearsal this past week we had an opportunity to ask her a few questions…

How do you as an individual live the 'ALLIANCE' of Art & Activism?

By being as open and authentic as I can. By being open, I learned and got more interest about how little behavior of the everyday life can make the difference. It reminds me that being part of a hole group, city, country, earth; through my actions, I inevitably share positive or negative energy with the world. I think we all should be aware of this responsibility and have the consciousness of what kind of energies and ideas you spread around you.

By being myself and trusting my instinct, I wish I can make that little difference for someone in the audience and make him feel the message.

What part of the rehearsal process or subject material did you find most inspiring?

I am fascinated how art and specially dance is a powerful way to share an idea and to make people want to act differently. During the process I was very touched by the emotion that Tracey and James are able to express through choreography. An extreme strong feeling to dance it, and I think it will be the most efficient point to get the audience understand the matter of activism : its when you're emotionally moved that you start care about.

What did you learn from your experiences that you would like to share with others?

By leaving home to explore another culture, I open my mind more and more because I am consistently facing different behavior and way of thinking. I experience every day that judgement, resistance, fight or any negative reaction doesn't help. That's why I always try to share those ideas with all my love and compassion through my dance and life.

Alexandra Shieron is a member of this project and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have her join us on this adventure! After rehearsal this past week we had an opportunity to ask her a few questions…

How do you as an individual live the 'ALLIANCE' of Art & Activism?

I'm a firm believer in what you get out of life is what you put into it. I give myself energetically to whatever I believe in and treat the world around me how I want to be treated. So when I witness something that doesn't seem right I want to express how I feel and fix it immediately. Unfortunately, one person can't fix the world's problems so I do my own small part on a daily basis. Whether that's eating organically, helping a friend in need, volunteering or making people aware of issues that affect them. I love that my passion- dance- can help unite people to a greater cause.

What part of the rehearsal process or subject material did you find most inspiring?

My favorite part of this process is working in the studio with my fellow dancers figuring out all the nuances of the choreography and what drives the dance forward. What my intention is, how to portray it and really delving into the role. It's inspiring to see what comes from working and interacting with such talented dancers. Being in rehearsal with Enforced Arch is such a treat as the issues they bring forward with their movement are aligned with what I believe in and want to share.

What did you learn from your experiences that you would like to share with others?

Living, dancing and performing in New York City is a very competitive, hectic scene. It's all too easy to forget why you dance, what you believe in and get caught up in the grind. Being able to dance in such a nurturing, caring environment with James and Tracey has really reminded me that dance (and life) is not just about tricks and flash but to move an audience in ways they don't normally experience. I want to continue on this path and use my art to inspire and educate people.

Katherine Roarty is a member of this project and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have her join us on this adventure! After rehearsal this past week we had an opportunity to ask her a few questions…

Enforced Arch: How do you as an individual live the 'ALLIANCE' of Art & Activism?

Katherine Roarty: Nothing is more honest than the relationship to another person in space. The touch of another human can cure the most fatal of illnesses. I want to heighten the awareness of our own power. We can change our world with just the touch of our hand. Reach out.

EA: What part of the rehearsal process or subject material did you find most inspiring?

KR: The "in between" moments of this rehearsal process are what most inspired me. The people involved with the project are not only talented but they are the definition of conscious citizens. Whether it be animal activism or teaching herbalism, these dancers spread their awareness from their fingertips and beyond. Most inspiring quality of these dancers, however, is their friendships that have created throughout this process.

EA: What did you learn from your experiences that you would like to share with others?

KR: People are what matter, whether they be family, friends or a furry critter. Support what and who you believe in. Stay in a present state of mind and the rest will follow.

ALLIANCE: Part 2 - Charles A. Desgagnes

Charles Alexis Desgagnes, Enforced Arch Charles Alexis Desgagnes' artistry is beyond human. Every imaginable character or subject he is asked to experience through movement shines because his dauntless personality breaths life into every step.

ALLIANCE, Enforced ArchOn April 6th and 7th, Enforced Arch is presenting their latest work, ‘ALLIANCE’ Art & Activism, which features past and current pieces by creative directors James Koroni and Tracey Katof. Charles Alexis Desgagnes is a member of this project and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have him join us on this adventure! After rehearsal this past week we had an opportunity to ask him a few questions…

Enforced Arch: How do you as an individual live the 'ALLIANCE' of Art & Activism?

Charles Alexis Desgagnes: Simple, I commit myself each day to always be a more compassionate and a less judgmental human being than the day before. I love being out of my comfort zone, as I truly feel it is the easiest, fastest and most rewarding way to grow. Dance is my 6th sense, my way to evoke thoughts and feelings as well as a tool to project concepts to other living matter that can't be told in any other way. I look forward to share and connect with my brothers and sisters around the world, using dance, art and activism as vehicles to distribute positive energy.

EA: What part of the rehearsal process or subject material did you find most inspiring?

CAD: Arriving later in the process, I truly enjoyed being part of the EA family right away, I felt quite at home in this eclectic group. I appreciate the intellectual and artistic process behind 'ALLIANCE' as movements are not only pretty movements but also representations of something else, something touchable, something palpable for the audience as well as the dancers. The social themes exploited, should it be animal welfare or the place of males in our society, are more than ever relevant and Enforced Arch does an amazing job at pointing them out.

EA: What did you learn from your experiences that you would like to share with others?

CAD: If there is one thing I learned in the last year is that even with all those amazing social opportunities at the tip of our fingers nowadays, people tend to disconnect the connection, in the sense that we easily forget that everything on this Earth is connected, humans, animals and plants. We are all one. People notice opportunities offered to them to engage in more social matters but sometimes toss them away by fear, ignorance or judgment. We need to let go of these negative patterns and reeducate our mind, spirit and bodies. Moving forward together, in the same direction, is the only way to do it. As a relatively new vegan, I also would like to share the immense feeling that comes from contributing to something useful in this world. It is truly the easiest and quickest way for anybody to really have a tangible positive effect on this planet and the creatures inhabiting it.

Dance 4 Oceans

Dance 4 Oceans Dance 4 Oceans is an environmental nonprofit group that raises public awareness about one of the most serious environmental issues, plastic pollution in the ocean.

Much like Enforced Arch they utilize dance as a means to spread awareness. They do this by reaching out to different communities or schools and invite them to create programs where the participants learn dances and make recycled crafts. During all the fun activities they also clean local beaches, host educational movie screenings and listen to easy to understand speeches about plastic pollution.

Their programs will inspire and support people to take personal responsibility by keeping our environment safe and healthy. They show people what hidden damages have been done in the ocean from plastic pollution. They educate adults and children how to reduce plastic trash from their residence and community.

Their ultimate goal is to create a leader in each community or school that is dedicated to propelling their programs forward and inspire new leaders to come.

The Harvard School of Public Health sent a strong message to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and nutrition experts everywhere with the recent release of its “Healthy Eating Plate” food guide.  The university was responding to the USDA’s new MyPlate guide for healthy eating, which replaced the outdated and misguided food pyramid.

Please, Don't Touch LIVE

Please, Don't Touch, Enforced Arch, James Koroni 'Please, Don't Touch,' depicts the unfortunate lives of animals caught up in the skin trade. With this performance piece we become a voice for the voiceless and tell their story. 'Please, Don't Touch' focuses energy on a topic that sits at the intersection of social justice, ecology and design. Our ultimate goal is to to become effective conduits for empathy and creative tools for change. Through the use of live performance, transmedia and personal interaction, this project will impact the heavily guarded perceptions of fur iconography by shedding light on what isn't revealed behind the glitz and glamor.

Friends For-Everglades

James Koroni, EvergladesLast week I took a trip to West Palm Beach, Florida where we visited the Everglades. I couldn't believe the amount of wildlife we saw! With a small Boardwalk stretching from one end to the other you could take a quick tour of this beautiful ecosystem. What a remarkable experience! These gentle creatures were interacting in peculiar ways. It wasn't any more strange than the unusual lives we humans have constructed for ourselves but compared to the rest of the animal kingdom, odd no less.Enforced Arch, Everglades Enforced Arch, EvergladesI was mesmerized by their beauty, strength and wide array of movement choices. Witnessing a bird leap then glide 20 feet in distance to instantly capture food upon landing was impressive. With great intention and grace he found the results he set out to achieve, even if it was just to experience his flight. My first reaction was, "what a grand distance to leap for a single insect." Perhaps that is my New York City perspective with our Bodegas' on every street corner. These animals are eternally mesmerizing!Enforced Arch, Everglades

Enforced Arch, EvergladesThis wetland is so close to human living communities that it serves as an educational tool and a constant reminder that the earth is not only home to us but is shared by these extraordinary lifeforms. With knowledge of these environments, providing life to millions of creatures around the world, I find that we carry great responsibility and should continue to preserve these natural habitats. It is easy to assume we don't depend on the well being of these "bizarre" living quarters but we are a member of this community at large. Respecting and educating ourselves of this fact is not only to their benefit but also elevates the quality of life in our global environmental community.Enforced Arch, Everglades

Enforced Arch, EvergladesWe were fortunate to come across at least 12 different species in this one habitat. I wanted to share my experiences with the Enforced Arch community to not only share a glimpse of their life but also inspire you to seek reminders in your own community!Enforced Arch, Everglades

Occupy Grand Army Plaza

Occupy Grand Army Plaza, Enforced Arch
Art by C.Martinez

Enforced Arch community is pleased to introduce you to Kathleen Stansell! Her effort entitled Occupy Grand Army Plaza is part of her company "Move for Change." She invites the dance community and supporters of this Movement to use their voices to support Occupy Wall St.

A statement from Kathleen Stansell:

Kathleen StansellMany have been saying, "Those people at Occupy Wall Street don't know what they stand for," which is just not true! If you ask anyone at Zuccotti Park, they'll tell you exactly why they're there. To save you the time and trip, I'll tell you. Occupy Wall Street is a movement inspired by our unjust and selfish government. Yes the banks are at fault. Yes the politicians are at fault. Yes greed is to blame. There are many to blame. But the truth is WE THE PEOPLE allowed this to happen. We accepted, for whatever reason, everything that's happened and has been happening. So first, the change must happen within ourselves. We must fight greed within ourselves. I ask myself, "Do I need that iPod or do I need to buy the food that is more expensive but better for my health? The LATTER! Do I need that extra pair of shoes, or do I need to donate that $60 to a homeless shelter." Occupy Wall Street is about standing together, in solidarity to help the people who live with us, next to us, far away from us, and everywhere. So please, if you don't help me, help that homeless shelter. If you don't help me, help companies like Reciprocity. If you don't help me, help yourself.

Please join us this Saturday at Grand Army Plaza, enjoy the performances and make donations for Occupy Wall Street in the form of food, clothing, blankets, hand warmers, warm clothing, first aid supplies, literature-both books and OWS literature such as information about credit unions, etc. Details:
